A guide to the best festive events 2017
HOLDSWORTH’S DERBYSHIRE – A GUIDE TO THE BEST FESTIVE EVENTS FOR 2017
The Peak District is a beautiful place to be for the festive period. Christmassy events take on a magical feel against the backdrop of our rolling hills, bright wintry skies and chocolate-box towns and villages, and there are loads of things to do during November and December to keep you and the kids busy.
Holdsworth Chocolates has been creating handmade, exquisite chocolates in the heart of the Peak District since 1988, and our Chocolate Factory and shop are well known in our beautiful little town of Bakewell. We are hugely proud to be from this stunning part of the world, so here is our edit of the best Christmas events and festive goings-on for 2017
Chatsworth Christmas Markets – 17th November – 5 December
What better place for a Christmas market than in the shadow of Chatsworth House, the stunning English Baroque-style stately home, which is seat to the Duke of Devonshire? The Chatsworth Christmas markets are host to over 100 stalls, selling a range of gorgeous Christmas gifts and decorations. There’s also mulled wine, German beers and a range of gorgeous food including gourmet sausages and churros.
Castleton Christmas Lights Switch On – 18 November
Father Christmas himself will be switching on the lights in the picture-postcard village of Castleton. Arriving by pony and cart, under the looming, festively illuminated Peveril Castle, Santa will make his way to the centre of the town to light it up. Castleton lends itself perfectly to the twinkly Christmas lights and festive atmosphere. The lights switch-on (at 4.30pm) will be accompanied by stalls and festivities, and a Santa’s Grotto too. Don’t miss out!
Bolsover Lantern Parade & Christmas Festival – 25 November
This annual event attracts thousands of visitors to the historic town, keen to get into the Christmas spirit! The town bustles with stalls, entertainment, art activities and street food, and the Lantern Parade will light up the streets as the big finale, as the community shows off its hand made lanterns in a procession from Bolsover Castle. A fabulous, family event.
Old Glossop Victorian Christmas Fayre – 3 December
Over 40 stalls selling traditional crafts and gifts are set up in the heart of the tiny, atmospheric village of Old Glossop. Grab a mulled wine, say hello to Father Christmas, take part in some festive Carol Singing and take in the entertainment with music and dancing keeping the crowds happy. A lovely festive day out.
Buxton Opera House – Sleeping Beauty – 9 – 31 December
The Opera House is a truly glorious building, set in the heart of the spa town of Buxton. This year, the story of Sleeping Beauty has been given a hilarious twist, and the pantomime is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of your little ones. After the performance, take a stroll around Buxton’s beautiful Pavilion Gardens and arts centre, and have some dinner at one of the local eateries. Buxton is truly magical at Christmas time.
Christmas food at The Hanging Gate, Chapel-en-le-Frith – November & December
The Hanging Gate in Chapel specialises in two things; great home-cooked, traditional food and absolutely bonkers Christmas decorations! To say this lovely little country pub goes to town on the decorations is a large understatement, as every inch of wall and ceiling is be-dazzled and twinkled with baubles, fairy lights and tinsel during the festive period. A wonderful assault on the senses, Christmas at The Hanging Gate has become an institution for families in the High Peak, keen to wow the kids and enjoy some great grub. Truly wonderful.
